Now that my stomach is getting a little bigger and I’m well into my second trimester, I’m having a harder time trying to mix up my workouts. I am also constantly seeing social media posts with pregnant women snatching and cleaning and jerking. From the beginning, I’ve always had a viewpoint on stopping any olympic lifting after my first trimester (I think I even stopped a little before just because I was paranoid). I think there is no right or wrong answer to this question-as I know many women perform olympic lift throughout their whole pregnancy.

Let’s talk about Bar Path:  Here is a visual of a barbell path progression for the snatch. Here we teach keeping the bar close to your body and should “brush” the bar upwards off your hips. If you think about it logically, there is no way a pregnant woman would be able to perform a snatch with good form and without the risk of hitting your stomach and baby. So what ends of happening is that the bar gets pulled too early and bangs off the body in order to avoid hitting the stomach. Again, I’m not trying to knock anyone who does this – they probably have the discipline to go back to the correct form after. For me, as a coach and owner I wouldn’t want any members or potential members seeing me do this and think it’s the correct way to snatch. I also don’t want to teach myself any bad habits

So those are my two cents on the topic, there are so many other exercises you can perform and since you’re not going to be PR’ing in any of the olympic lifts I feel there’s better ways to stay fit and keep your baby safe!
