It’s been a while since we’ve done a member spotlight and we’re so happy to feature Rebecca “Becca” Hogshead! You usually can spot her and her cool headbands at the evening classes and if you haven’t met her yet, be sure to introduce yourself! She’s been a member now for a few months and has made amazing progress in such a short time, she has a great attitude and is always challenging herself. What was your first impression of CrossFit and how has that changed?

I heard about CrossFit from a friend who was at Team CrossFit Academy. My first time at a box I remember thinking. “There’s so much to learn!” I came from a gym where I was bored with my workouts and desperate for something new. I also remember saying a silent prayer hoping I wouldn’t puke. Still haven’t tossed my cookies & still learning a ton!

When did you start CrossFitting?

I’ve been CrossFitting off and on since 2013. It was hard to stay consistent on a graduate school budget.

How did you find Torrance CrossFit?

I went to graduate school with Sammi!

What’s your favorite thing about CrossFit?

So many things! I love that I’m never bored. I love the community and connections you can make at a box. I love that CrossFit celebrates strength and function over the idea of “skinny”. I struggled with my weight growing up. At my heaviest I was about 165lbs in college. I think for women in particular, that shift in focus is both empowering and freeing.

What results have you seen since starting CrossFit?

There have been great direct results like leaning out, gaining muscle and getting my first strict pull-ups (after years of trying). But I’ve noticed a lot of indirect results as well. I’m no runner but I’ve managed a few 4+ mile runs with friends without wanting to die. I’ve also noticed I’ve had better energy and moods in general.

What’s your favorite Torrance CrossFit memory?

Being relatively new to TCF (and an introvert) you can often find me on the sidelines somewhere just watching before class starts. I remember seeing everyone from the class before finish the workout, except for one person. A few people stayed to cheer her on. Then a few more people joined, till quite a group surrounded that person to encourage her through the last few reps. If I wasn’t sold on TCF before, that pretty much sealed the deal!

What advice do you have to people who are on the fence about doing CrossFit?

Just do it. Seriously. What have you got to lose? Don’t wait till you “get in shape” to start CrossFit. Find a gym where you feel comfortable with people of all shapes & sizes and give it a shot.

I can be easily swayed by anything involving breakfast. Post weekend workout brunch adventures are my favorite!

What is your most proud moment/achievement in CrossFit?

Finally getting kipping pull-ups! Although it hasn’t’ happened yet, the day I can actually use double unders in a workout will be a big one too.
